<description>Chief Nut, I believe social media is definitely marketing with simply a new set of values. While there is definitely an ettiquette that must be observed, many of the motives are marketing driven.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to suggest that there are many levels of social media. As you are aware of my blog on branding, as well as others that I link to - we are all essentially striking up conversations with other business minded individuals looking for tools and advice to help them make put more coin in their pockets.

Being involved in marketing for all of my business life, you come to view all avenues of contact as a marketing opportunity. Social media is a terrific networking tool. In the year that I've been building my blog, I've met countless other blog authors who's motivation is to build audience to the point of of attracting advertisers. This I would argue is a form of "social marketing". Even the dictionary meaning of the word media is "the plural of mass communication" which is the conduit of marketing. So Social Media, Electronic Media, Print Media etc. are all avenues of marketing.

Perhaps purists out there don't like the idea of being sold to in the tradional sense of marketing. In the delivery of free advice on my blog and others I write for, I am selling my expertise on the subject. Their reply pro or con is the acceptance of this message. The power of Social Marketing (media) is this two-way connection where as traditional marketing is only one-way.

That's it for tonight. I enjoy your blog - it inspires great conversation.
