Millllions And Milllllions

November 2nd, 2006 by Chief Nut

A La Carl Sagan, there are indeed milllions and milllions of stars and web sites. According to Netcraft, an Internet monitoring company, we’ve passed the 100,000,000 mark in domain names with actual web sites. Active sites (some more than others), according to the report, account for about 48 million. Considering the Web was sub-20K in 1995, we’ve come a long way in a quarter of a generation. The question I have is “what opportunities await you in this wave of change?”

I had a discussion last week with a business owner who justified why they don’t need to build a web site for their business. Similarly, several times a month, I have discussions of why a multi-million dollar business is hesitant to spend more than a couple thousand dollars on their web sites because they “just don’t see the value in it”. Picture a man standing at the beach, ankle deep in water, enjoying what appears to be a nice sunny day. Facing in towards the beach he doesn’t see the 20 foot high, tidal wave, wall of water about to hit him from behind. That’s milllions and milllions of gallons of competition. Yeah, it’s kinda like that.
